Do you know what DiSC is exactly? What impact does our behaviour and communication have on others? And how the DiSC tool can be useful in a professional context? An interesting topic, which some fifteen members of the Cala Learning Hub network were able to discover thanks to coach Sara Bruzy during the October 2022 webinar.

For the record, the DiSC model was created from the book The Emotions of Normal People written in 1928 by the American psychologist William Moulton Marston, who also invented the first functional lie detector and... the character of Wonder Woman !

DiSC pour Dominance, Influence, Steadiness et Conscientiousness

The acronym DiSC uses the four traits defined by the tool - Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Conscientiousness - to explain the behaviour of individuals in their professional and personal lives. These four "energies" are associated with colours: green, red, blue and yellow.

  • D for Dominance

These are usually outspoken, efficient people who are not afraid to take risks. They are motivated by competition, but can appear self-centred, arrogant or impatient.

  • I for Influence

Optimistic, sociable and enthusiastic, these people are motivated by group activities and relationships with others. The risk is that they may be perceived as unorganised or superficial.

  • S for Steadiness

These individuals are calm, patient, pleasant and eager to help others. The problem is that they can appear possessive or lacking in self-confidence.

  • C for Conscientiousness

Thorough and even perfectionist, they are motivated by learning and high-quality work. But they can also be perceived as overly formal or fussy.

"Of course, each person is a mixture of these different profiles," says Sara Bruzy. "You can't be 100% dominant, for example". According to her, the benefits of the DiSC tool are multiple. It can help us to develop our skills, adapt our approach to that of those we interact with (to avoid tensions and conflicts), develop our leadership or even improve the cohesion of our team. "Depending on our DiSC profile, what is stressful for us may be perceived by someone else as a source of motivation for example," she explains.

An essential tool for building a good team

"We don't all appreciate the same qualities in our colleagues, which is why diversity is essential in a team," advises Sara Bruzy. According to Sara, the DiSC tool is easier to use than other tools, such as the PCM, and allows the profile of the different members of a group, including the manager, to be identified. "This allows each person to take a step back and the manager to get the best out of each person," she concludes.
